Explore Middleburg

Middleburg is a 17th-century former rice plantation on the East Branch of the Cooper River in Huger, South Carolina. This National Historic Landmark features the oldest standing home in the Southern United States. Whitewater owns and manages the 323-acre protected property, promoting access and engagement with this complex part of U.S. history. Situated in the middle of a Lowcountry preserve, Middleburg serves as an exceptional base camp for fishing, biking, paddling and more.

Property Information

Middleburg is comprised of 4 structures including the main house, kitchen house, commissary and guest house. Combined, all four buildings accommodate up to 28 people. The property is surrounded by the Francis Marion National Forest and the Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management Area.

Middleburg exists today in many respects as it did hundreds of years ago when the original French Huguenot owners constructed the main house. The path of live oaks leading to the house allows visitors to reflect back on a different time when Middleburg was primarily a rice plantation. The main house sits as it has for over 330 years, having survived both the American Revolution and Civil War. Carvings in the window and porch bear marks from these wars. The remnants of the old blacksmith shop, rice mill and adjoining wharf can be found at the end of the canal.

The property overlooks the Cooper River, once a lifeblood of Charleston. The original inland and tidal rice fields remain, serving as an important habitat for a wide range of waterfowl, fish, deer, turkey, alligators and other wildlife. The canal has a dock that serves as a put-in for paddling the river, fishing and lounging. Additional amenities include porches, congregation and outdoor grilling areas, fire pits and full kitchens with expansive views of the Cooper River.
