School Groups and Field Trips

Middleburg is a unique look back into the human and natural history of the South Carolina Lowcountry for the past 330 years. This National Historic Landmark typifies the rice plantations that were a vital part of Charleston’s complex and often both prosperous and inhumane history. The main house demonstrates the craftsmanship of the enslaved individuals and Huguenot settlers that built this house that stands today almost exactly as it did when completed in 1797. The outbuildings including the kitchen building with the enormous still-standing pass-through fireplace along with the old commissary which served as the center of commerce for the area are unique glimpses back in time. The most extraordinary feature are the remains of the old rice mill from the early 1800’s. This steam powered mill was literally the engine that drove the economy for the wealthy rice growers replacing the old hand work performed by the enslaved workers on the plantation.

Guided history programs related to the economic, cultural and natural history are available for scheduled educational and youth groups. Day and overnight programs are available for educational institutions interested in engaging in further research and understanding of the rich history represented by Middleburg.
