Property Information
High on the NC and VA border of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Windfall overlooks the 7 tallest peaks in Virginia as well as the taller peaks to the south including Mt Mitchell. The 360 degree views of these peaks include, Whitetop and Mount Rogers as well as the Grayson Highlands. These mountains are famous for their windswept peaks approaching 6,000 feet and the wild horses and longhorn cattle grazing on the rocky balds. The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, a 200,000 acre playground for biking, fishing, hiking and climbing is just north of Windfall. The New River, a National Wild and Scenic River, is located just to the east offering spectacular paddling and fishing.
Two of the highlights of this region are the Virginia Creeper Trail and the Appalachian Trail. The Creeper Trail is a 34 mile rail trail stretching from Whitetop at 3500′ to Abingdon at close to 2000′. This grandaddy of the national rail trails is a perfect ride for families as well as hard core gravel riders that link onto some of the best gravel routs in the Southeast. The Appalachian trail intersects with the Creeper in Damascus VA, “Trail Town USA” before continuing across Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers into Grayson Highlands. This section of the AT is generally considered to be the most spectacular of the entire 2200 mile trail.
Windfall dates back to the 1800’s as an Appalachian farm where horses and chickens still roam. There are several hiking trails crossing the 215 acre property featuring a stream fed pond and a 4000 foot high meadow. Boone Fork Creek flows across the property before falling over 500 feet down into Bighorse Creek which offers some of the best trout fishing in the region. Running along Big Horse on the farm is the old Virginia Creeper rail bed that worked its way into West Jefferson.
The farm is a 15 minute drive up the mountain from the small, but cool town of Lansing. Lansing has a very small old grocery store with limited supply but a great pizza and sandwich shop and a fantastic coffee shop and a small bar called the Liar’s Bench. West Jefferson is another 15 minutes further south and it has full service amenities and is a very popular and growing mountain-tourist town. Heading to the northwest into VA is Damascus VA which has several good places to eat and drink and shop. Damascus is well worth checking out, as is Abingdon just a few miles further west. Abingdon is one of the best small towns in America featuring the the Barter Theater offering first class plays and great shopping and dining. Any trip to this part of the world should include a visit to this historic and very cool town. Whitewater is building a new 500 acre biking center just outside of Abingdon at the end of the Creeper Trail offering single track and gravel trails for mountain biking and other off-road biking.
