Whitewater

Gravel Cycling

The South Carolina low country offers some of the most unique and beautiful off-road riding in North America. The vast swaths of protected land between the Cooper and Santee Rivers contains hundreds of miles of forest service roads and trails throughout the coastal backcountry. Swamps and pine forests merge with coastal savannas to keep the scenery constantly changing. While there is minimal elevation change in the region, riders are in for a true all-road cycling experience with a range of surfaces including gravel, forest floor, coquina, and boardwalks. The stretches of off-road riding offer interaction with significant historical sites, abundant wildlife, and iconic cultural sites.

About

The Francis Marion National Forest and Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management Area contain hundreds of miles of forest service roads with numerous established routes. Lake Moultrie is circled by long swaths of unpaved double track that are regularly accessed by cyclists looking to get off the pavement. Whitewater and many other groups in the region offer organized group rides for cyclists looking to explore off-road tracks within the Santee Basin.
