Whitewater

Firefly Sync

From late May to early June, a variety of firefly species emerge and light up select locations throughout the southeast United States in perfect unison. This bioluminescent display occurs for only about 4 weeks out of the year during the species’ mating season. Guests are invited to join in the low country in hopes of getting a view of the phenomenon.

Middleburg offers a rare glimpse of the annual synchronization around the property with ample opportunities throughout the expansive pastures and riverfront views. Each Firefly Sync evening will consist of access to the historical property, a walking tour of the grounds, live music and relaxation around the fire pit for a $15 parking fee with a maximum of 50 cars per evening. Beverages will be available for purchase.

Please Note: Weather conditions, mating cycles, soil consistency and other environment factors may impact the emergence and display of fireflies on any given night. Whitewater cannot guarantee the emergence or volume of the firefly spectacle and does not offer reschedule dates or refunds for this event.

Story of Middleburg

Middleburg has existed for more than three centuries on the Cooper River as a center of commerce and congregation in the low country. The property has persisted through numerous historical events during the development and evolution of the United States of America.  As one of America’s oldest and best-preserved historical landmarks, Middleburg offers a unique insight into over 325 years of history.

Accomodations

Four historic buildings serve as the centerpiece of this former rice estate dating back to the 17th century. The Cooper River no longer transports rice downstream to Charleston but it still offers fishing and river access to some of the region’s best recreation. Middleburg can accommodate up to 28 people for overnight accomodations. The 323 acres serve as an ideal backdrop for weddings and other private events as well. Whitewater hosts a number of biking, running and nature based events at Middleburg across the year.
